How Do Air Purifiers Work?

Most air purifiers used for for residential applications use a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter. HEPA filters are made of randomly arranged fibers designed to capture particles. By definition, a HEPA filter must be capable of removing 99.97% of particles sized 0.3µm. They work using three principles:

  • Interception: Particles following a line of flow in the air stream come within one radius of a fiber in the filter to adhere to it.
  • Impaction: Larger particles are unable to avoid the fibers in the filter by following the curving contours of the air stream and are forced to embed in one of them directly.
  • Diffusion: The collision of very small particles (below 0.1 µm in diameter) with gas molecules impedes their motion through the filter, therefore trapping them.
