Because R-22 is an ozone depleting material, the Environmental Protection Agency (which also banned its imports and production) requires its replacement.

This has both advantages and disadvantages. R-22 is approximately five times more expensive than R-410A. Purchasing a new R-410A system will have a greater initial cost. The trade-off is that your system will function more efficiently, lowering your energy bills. And you’re helping to create a cleaner environment that doesn’t deplete the ozone layer.

A well-maintained air conditioning system is more efficient since it does not have to work as hard to move air through the coils.
